How do you learn mahjong as a beginner?

Learn mahjong in small steps, one skill at a time. Here is a simple plan.

  1. Pick a style. Learn the style your friends or local group play. American and Chinese mahjong use different rules.
  2. Learn the tiles. Sort a set into its kinds of tiles. Say each name out loud.
  3. Learn the sets. A pung is 3 of the same tile, and a kong is 4. Hands are built from sets like these.
  4. Play a slow game. Play with friends who know the game. Talk through each move.
  5. Take a class. A teacher can answer questions as you play. See our guide to mahjong lessons.
  6. Play often. Each game makes the next one easier.

What are the mahjong basics?

Mahjong 101 comes down to four things: the tiles, the turn, the sets and the goal.

  • The tiles: an American set has 3 suits called dots, bams and craks. It also has winds, dragons, flowers and 8 jokers. A joker is a wild tile.
  • The turn: take a tile, then discard one. A discard is a tile you throw away, face up. Play moves to the right, or counterclockwise.
  • The sets: a pair is 2 of the same tile. Pungs and kongs are 3 and 4. Chinese and Japanese styles also use chows, which are 3 in a row in one suit. American mahjong does not.
  • The goal: be the first to build a winning hand of 14 tiles.

What tips help beginners most?

A few good habits make your first games easier.

  • Learn a few hands at a time. You do not need the whole card on day one.
  • Name each discard out loud. It helps everyone follow the game.
  • Never pass a joker. In the Charleston, jokers may never be passed.
  • Keep your hands off other racks. Do not touch other players' tiles.
  • Be patient. Everyone is slow at first.

Tip: Keep a mahjong cheat sheet by your rack for your first few games.
