Is Mahjong Hard to Learn?
Quick answer
Mahjong is not as hard to learn as it looks. Each turn is simple: take a tile, then discard one. What takes time is learning the tiles, the new words and the winning hands. Beginner classes often run 3 to 6 sessions, and slow practice games help a lot.
At a glance
- Each turn: take 1 tile, then discard 1
- Kinds of tiles: 7 in an American set
- Winning hand: 14 tiles
- American card: new hands every year
- Beginner classes: often 7.5 to 12 hours in all
Why is mahjong so hard at first?
Mahjong feels hard at first because so much is new at once. Here is what can trip up beginners.
- Lots of tiles. There are 3 suits numbered 1 to 9, plus winds, dragons and flowers. American sets add jokers, which are wild tiles.
- New words. A pung is 3 of the same tile, and a kong is 4. The Charleston is a tile swap before play starts.
- Many winning hands. In American mahjong, the hands on the card change every year. Even skilled players learn new hands each spring.
- Rules for discards. A discard is a tile a player throws away. You may take one only at certain times.
- Scoring. Each style keeps score in its own way.
The good news is that you do not need all of it on day one.
What parts of mahjong are easy?
The basic turn is easy, and it never changes.
- Every turn is the same: take a tile, then discard one.
- American tiles have numbers and English letters, so you do not need to read Chinese.
- In American mahjong, every winning hand is printed on the card.
- Luck plays a part, so a new player can still win a hand.
Is American or Chinese mahjong easier?
Neither style is easy or hard for everyone. Each one has its own tricky parts.
| Style | Easier part | Harder part |
|---|---|---|
| American | Every winning hand is on the card. | Jokers, the Charleston and new hands each year. |
| Chinese | One basic shape: 4 sets plus a pair. | Scoring can get detailed. |
