A clear guide to body odor after 40

Everything You Need to Know About “Old People Smell” (A.K.A. Nonenal)

Body odor changes after 40. Here is what happens to skin oils, why the smell can return after showering, and what can be done about it.

01 · The basics

How normal body odor is made

The body does not make just one smell. Sweat, skin oil, and skin germs can each play a part.

Sweat

Fresh sweat has very little smell. It mainly helps cool the body.

Skin oil

Skin oil is also called sebum. It keeps the skin from feeling too dry.

Skin germs

Normal skin germs break down sweat and oil. This can make odor.

The key point

Underarm smell often starts with sweat and germs. Nonenal starts in a different way. It starts when some skin oils break down.

02 · The name

What is “old people smell”?

The phrase is not a medical name. It is a common name for the way body scent can change with age.

2-NONENAL An odor compound linked with aging skin

2-nonenal is one part of this scent. It is a small odor molecule made when certain skin oils break down.

  • It is linked with skin oil, not dirt.
  • It was found in adults age 40 and over in one early study.
  • It can affect both men and women.
  • It is not the only smell the body can make.

03 · The problem chain

How nonenal forms on the skin

The full science has many steps. The basic idea is simple.

Medical skin illustration showing surface oils slowly breaking down and releasing faint odor molecules
Skin oil can change when it meets oxygen over time.
1

Skin makes oil

The oil helps protect the skin.

2

Some oils change

More omega-7 oils can be found as skin gets older.

3

Oxygen breaks them down

This step is called oxidation.

4

2-nonenal forms

The new molecule has a clear smell.

This is not the same as sweat odor

Sweat odor often comes from germs. Nonenal is tied to the way skin oil breaks down.

04 · Why age matters

Why is it linked with age 40?

Skin oil does not stay the same for life. The mix of oils can change as the body gets older.

Before 40

The early study did not find 2-nonenal in the younger group.

Age 40+

The study found 2-nonenal only in this older group.

Real life

Every body is different. Age 40 is not an on-and-off switch.

  • The change is often slow.
  • Some people may notice it. Some may not.
  • Both men and women can make 2-nonenal.
  • Hot flashes can add sweat odor, but sweat and nonenal are not the same.
  • The change does not mean that the skin is dirty.

05 · Common clues

Where may the odor be noticed?

It may stand out where skin oil builds up or where fabric sits close to the body.

On the body

  • Scalp and hairline
  • Behind the ears
  • Back of the neck
  • Upper chest and back
  • Warm skin folds

On fabric

  • Shirt and robe collars
  • Bras and undershirts
  • Towels
  • Pillowcases
  • Bedding
A useful clue is not a test.

Behind the ears is often talked about. Science has not named it as one sure nonenal spot.

06 · The nose

Why can it be hard to smell on oneself?

The brain gets used to smells that stay close. This is called smell adaptation.

The change may be slow

A small daily change is hard to spot.

The nose gets used to it

A steady smell can fade into the background.

Fabric may hold more oil

A collar or pillowcase may smell stronger than clean skin.

Perfume can hide the clue

It may cover the smell for a short time.

No home test can prove nonenal

Smelling a collar or the skin can give a clue. It cannot name the exact molecule.

07 · The wash gap

Why may regular body wash seem too short-lived?

Regular wash still cleans the skin. The gap is that most wash is made for dirt, sweat, and daily grime.

What regular wash does well

  • Lifts dirt from the skin
  • Rinses away sweat
  • Removes some surface oil
  • Leaves a clean feel

Why odor may still return

  • Skin keeps making new oil
  • Some oily spots may be missed
  • Fabric may hold old residue
  • Perfume may only cover the smell
Regular wash is not useless.

The honest point is smaller: a basic wash may not be made to target this exact odor problem.

08 · Five different jobs

Odor products do not all work the same way

A label may say “fresh.” The work behind that word can be very different.

1

Clean

Wash away sweat, dirt, and oil.

2

Slow sweat

Use an antiperspirant to lower wetness.

3

Lower germs

Cut the germs that make some sweat smell.

4

Cover

Add a strong scent over the old smell.

5

Capture

Use an ingredient made to meet odor itself.

A good nonenal routine may need more than one job: clean the oily residue, meet the odor, then rinse it away.

09 · Simple comparison

What each ingredient is made to do

No single ingredient does every job. This chart shows the main difference.

Type Main job Main limit
Regular wash Lifts dirt, sweat, and some oil Not made for one special odor
Fragrance Covers a smell May not remove the source
Antibacterial wash Lowers some skin germs Nonenal does not start with germs
Antiperspirant Lowers sweat Does not stop skin-oil oxidation
Persimmon tannins Give plant-based odor support The amount and formula matter
Zinc ricinoleate Helps capture many odor molecules It is not an antiperspirant

An ingredient name alone does not prove a result. The full formula, amount, and way it is used all matter.

10 · Human research

What did the persimmon-soap study find?

A small human study tested a soap made with a mix of plant polyphenols.

20men
43–75years old
4weeks
Dailysoap use

The result

The amount of measured 2-nonenal went down. Odor scores also became lower.

What the study does—and does not—show

It does show
  • A daily polyphenol soap showed promise.
  • The test used real people.
  • 2-nonenal was measured.
It does not show
  • Persimmon worked alone.
  • Every persimmon wash works the same.
  • Venlov was the product in the study.

The soap used oolong tea, tiencha, green tea, and astringent persimmon. The study was small and included men only.

A wash built around a different odor problem

Venlov ZeroTrace™ pairs daily cleansing with two kinds of odor support. It does not rely on a strong perfume.

01

Lift the oily layer

Wash agents loosen sweat, dirt, and skin oil.

02

Meet the persistent odor

Persimmon tannins add plant-based deodorizing support.

03

Help capture odor

Zinc ricinoleate supports broad odor capture.

04

Rinse it away

The lather and loosened residue leave with the water.

Problem Odor starts in changing skin oil
Matching approach Clean the oil and support odor capture

ZeroTrace is a cosmetic wash. It helps manage odor. It does not stop aging or treat a medical condition.

13 · The lab test

How does science find 2-nonenal?

A lab does not guess by smell. It collects the odor and separates each small part.

1

Collect

A skin or fabric sample holds the odor.

2

Separate

A machine splits the odor into parts.

3

Name

A mass test finds the 2-nonenal signal.

The full name: headspace gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, often shortened to GC-MS.

No simple home test exists

A smell check cannot prove that 2-nonenal is present. Only a lab can name the exact molecule.

14 · Other causes

Not every new smell is nonenal

Body odor can change for many reasons. The smell, body area, and other signs all matter.

Nonenal

Often described as oily, grassy, stale, or musty.

Linked with changing skin oils

Sweat and germs

Often strongest in the underarms, groin, or feet.

Linked with sweat, warmth, and skin germs

Fabric or mildew

May stay in towels, collars, bedding, or damp rooms.

Linked with trapped oil, moisture, or poor drying

Health or medicine

A fast or strong change can have another cause.

May need a health check

When a health check makes sense

  • The smell changes very fast.
  • Sweating becomes much heavier.
  • A rash, pain, sore, or fever appears.
  • The smell also comes from the breath or urine.
  • Normal care does not help.

A cosmetic wash is not a test or a medical treatment.

15 · The daily cost

What can happen when the odor goes unmanaged?

Nonenal is not a disease. The larger cost is often the worry and the daily loop around it.

Smell returns Wash again Add perfume Check again
  • More showers can leave mature skin dry.
  • Strong perfume may mix with the old smell.
  • Oil can move into collars, towels, and bedding.
  • Smell checks can take over the day.
  • Close talks, hugs, and social plans may feel harder.

The goal is not to fight age. The goal is to feel clean, calm, and sure again.

16 · Common questions

Questions about nonenal and ZeroTrace

Short answers to the questions that come up most.

Is “old people smell” real?

Age can change the mix of odor molecules on the skin. 2-nonenal is one molecule linked with that change.

Does nonenal start on the 40th birthday?

No. One early study found it only in people age 40 and over. The change is not a fixed birthday switch.

Does it mean the skin is dirty?

No. It is tied to the way some skin oils break down. A person can wash each day and still notice a change.

Is it the same as menopause odor?

No. Hot flashes can add more sweat. Nonenal is linked with skin-oil oxidation. Both can happen at the same time.

Can regular soap remove it?

Regular soap can remove some surface oil. It may still feel short-lived if new oil forms or old residue stays in fabric.

What do persimmon tannins do?

Persimmon tannins are plant polyphenols. They are used for antioxidant and deodorizing support. The amount and full formula matter.

What does zinc ricinoleate do?

It is a broad odor-capture ingredient. It is not an antiperspirant, so it does not block normal sweat.

How long should freshness last?

There is no set time for every person. Skin, heat, sweat, fabric, and the amount of oil all change the result.

Can ZeroTrace be used from head to toe?

ZeroTrace is made as a scalp-to-feet external wash. The label directions should guide use. Eyes and internal areas should be avoided.

Is it made for sensitive mature skin?

The formula is fragrance-free and includes glycerin and oat beta-glucan for skin comfort. A small patch test is wise when skin is very reactive.

Can the smell stay in clothes and bedding?

Skin oil can move into fabric. Clean skin can still meet old residue in a collar, towel, or pillowcase.

Has ZeroTrace itself been clinically tested?

The cited human study tested a different mixed-polyphenol soap. It was not a Venlov study. ZeroTrace is based on the same broad odor-care logic, not a claim of finished-product clinical proof.

When should a doctor be asked?

A health check makes sense when odor changes fast, sweating rises a lot, a rash or pain appears, or the smell also comes from breath or urine.
